This is a message from Dr. Anthony George's Wednesday night Bible study. Here's the link to the audio message from FBA's website. My notes are only meant to be a guide to assist in your Bible study. Enjoy! :)
Steps to overcome temptations in adversity by using the Word
1 Corinthians 10:13 NASB
Adversity opens us up to: give into fear, uncertainties, false faith, temptations,
Whether its right or wrong, God will always make it possible for us to come out victorious. Can you pass the test? How did Jesus overcome temptations?
Matthew 4
- Satan knows your weaknesses. He knew Jesus was hungry.
- Matthew 4:4
- The secret to overcoming temptation is to use the Word.
- Jesus didn't have a Bible app or the Internet to rely on to find scripture. He had to recite them from memory. Could you do the same?
- Here Jesus used the verses from Deutoronomy 8:2-3 NLT
- "I'd rather drop dead than to misuse my power because I'm hungry"
- Satan knows the Bible. He quoted scripture.
- Matthew 4:6
- He will quote it out of context, to communicate the wrong thing at the wrong time.
- The devil is a master at manipulating scripture.
- This time Jesus uses Deutoronomy 6:16 NASB, where Moses was reminding his people about trusting God when they were in a time of doubt. The event Moses refers to actually happened in Exodus 17:7 NLT, where the people questioned whether God was with them.
- Jesus didn't need to question whether God was with Him, because He is God! He knew His Father was with Him.
- Satan asked Jesus to practice idolatry in order to get a shortcut to what He was promised.
- Jesus knew better! Do we? Temptations are not always as blatantly clear as this.
- Jesus quotes Deutoronomy 6:10-15 NASB: do not depend on anything or anyone other than God. He will bless you beyond your imagination.
JESUS KNEW THE BIBLE. SO SHOULD YOU.
- With the technologies available today, we should be able to learn all we ever aspire to about growing deeper with knowledge about the Bible. Yet, Satan has created countless distractions to keep us from it.
- G-E-L-N-D
- Joshua Judges Ruth!

YOU NEED TO KNOW SPECIFIC SCRIPTURES.
- Scriptures are not just to know, but to use as well!
- Ephesians 6:17 NASB
- Can't use the sword if we don't know it!
- For every obstacle and temptation, use a verse of scripture to fight it!
- Dr. George tip: write your obstacle on an index card. When you find the scripture that fights it, write it on the other side!
- Don't grow weary, because in due season...
- James 1:1-8
- Deuteronomy 6:23, God doesn't leave promises unfinished.
- Proverbs 10:22
- Psalm 37:23, my steps are ordered by God, not by human age
- Next step, speak the Word. Keep reciting the Word until the obstacles are overcome.
- Romans 8:28
Dig out the promises from the Word and use them, for IT IS WRITTEN.
