March 8, 2020 | Remember the Lord

These are notes from a sermon message heard at First Baptist Church of Atlanta. To hear the message, please visit their website here. My notes are only meant to be a guide to assist in your Bible study. Enjoy! :)
Date: March 8, 2020
Preacher: Dr. Anthony George
Title: Remember the Lord
Base verse: Deuteronomy 6:10-15

Today in service, the choir sang an amazing song that the congregation requested an encore. While I don’t have a recording of the performance, I did find the song through the lyrics. It is the song titled GOD by Eddie James. Here’s a link to a video to another church’s performance of the song.

God knows and understands all the distractions we have and how our desires lead us away from Him. God built in reminders to help us refocus back on Him.
Our human tendency is to forget God. We are more inclined to turn towards God when we’re in trouble. Yet we need God all the time, no matter how good or bad life is going.

Free stuff can be a curse. Contentment can be a curse.

How do we end up forgetting God?
  • We focus on our circumstances. The here and now. We crave immediacy. It leads you to forget where you’re going.
  • We seek after pleasure. Any of our 5 senses. Be careful not to overindulge in satisfying your pleasures than turning to God. We all gonna die--do you want to keep pleasuring your senses, or start feeding your spirit?
  • Hebrew 10:11
  • We stop looking back. God wants us to remember all He’s brought us through so we know we can trust Him in our future. Philippians
  • We yield to ungodly influences. We are more likely to side with those around us, those who are reminding us what we’re missing out on. When we embrace false views, we embrace false values, we embrace false gods. Deuteronomy 6:14 NKJV
How do we remember God?
  • By remembering everything God has given to you. Thank God for all that you have. Acknowledge every blessing is from God. How much do you take for granted?
  • By refusing to glorify anything or anyone but Him. God has a zero tolerance policy for following other gods! God’s people will always face opposition.
  • By praising Him for His faithfulness in the past.
  • By living in His Word Deuteronomy 6:17 NKJV
  • By expressing trust in Him for our future. Deuteronomy 6:18-19 NKJV
  • God knows every devil you will face in your life. He will take care of you through each one of them.
  • Deuteronomy 7:14-15 NLT While this does not apply to us, because it was written for the israelites going to the cannainites, we worship the same God. We know God did good on His promise here, so we can know that God will bring us through.
  • Exodus 12:13 NKJV This does not apply to us, as it applied to the israelites, yet the blood symbolizes the blood of Jesus Christ who has been painted over our hearts.
  • Psalm 91:1-7 A test kit is not my refuge, being quarantined is not my refuge. God is my refuge.
Isaiah 41:10

If you are saved, do you realize the worst thing that can happen to us? The worst thing that can happen is the suffering we have in this life. Death will take us to a place with no more pain, no more suffering, no more troubles of this life.
Wash your hands. Be careful. But don’t be afraid.
