Mar. 09, 2016 | Counter-Culture Church

This is one of Dr. Anthony George's Wednesday night Bible study messages . Here is the link to the message on FBA's website! My notes are only meant to be a guide to assist in your Bible study. Enjoy! Titus 2:1-8
  • Island of Crete
  • What is sound doctrine? Fundamentals of the faith. Also anything we teach from scripture. Responsibilities to be carried out by men and women of the church.
  • Paul often wrote letters to counter the myths and commandments of men that were against scriptures.
    • Titus 1:12-13
  • Strengthening local churches is one of the things we should be focusing on.

How to be a counter-culture church:
  1. Challenge the men. Titus 2:2
    • Teach them to set an example, instead of being self-indulgent
    • Be reverent; dignified; distinguished
    • Sound in faith; strong in faith, patience, love for others
    • Men are called to take the leadership role; this does not change equality--men and women are loved equally in the eyes of God.
      • Cure for feminism is good men. Men who will step up to take on the responsibility of a leader.
      • When you challenge a Godly man, he will take on the challenge.
  2. Strengthen the families. Titus 2:3
    • Families are important to the church.
    • The church should be where families grow stronger, not to remind you what you could have or what you once did have, but remind you about what you do have.
    • No experiences alter God's plan for a family; flaws and victimization and all that do not change His plan.
    • The richest advice to families is found in letters to the churches. God intended the church to be the platform to teach how families should be. All of morality is centered around family life.
      • Ephesians 5 & 6
  3. Distinguish the roles. Titus 2:4-5 & Titus 2:6-8
    • Human beings are either male or female. Genesis 1:28
      • God determines the gender of each of us.
      • He made us differently so that we would operate differently.
      • God made women to complete the man, not to mirror him.
      • God says no to masculinizing women and
    • Equal worth, distinct in function.
    • We must stand for the Word of God and what the Bible teaches us, stop letting things slide.
    • None of these current issues are new; they are all just different manifestations of what has happened since the beginning.
      • Deuteronomy 22:5 NLT
    • God wants us to look like how our genders should look. Doesn't matter what you look like or how you act.
    • Children should be taught this at home, at a young age: there is a difference between a boy and a girl; values; different roles of family members.
    • Fathers: teach values, shop with your daughters (you have the right to decide what she wears while its still your money!)
    • Mothers: embrace roles; instill virtue; acknowledge imperfections and mistakes; demand respect; mentor younger women
      • Reminder that mothers are the hub of a home. Children all depend on the mama.
      • Genesis 3:20 NASB
        • Her body is where life conceives, where life develops, nurtures.
        • Elizabeth Elliot's Passion and Purity
    • By teaching the truth, we are in no way condemning anyone.  Our culture is confused and angry. If we lose our voice in our family, there is no foundation and families crumble. Even before the church and Israel, God made the family.
  4. Honor the elders.
    • Dress your age. Act your age. There is no perpetual youth.
    • God has blessed you with long life. Wear your crown of age.
    • Our culture focuses on the young and dispenses the old.
    • Yet the longer you've lived, the greater the testimony of God's favor.
    • 1 Timothy 5:3-4 NLT
  5. Invest in the younger.
    • The older must teach the younger.
    • Children matter, the next generation matters. They deserve to know the truth and the past. They will one day be in charge. They will pick what home you will live in when you're old.

Malachi 2:14-15 NLT
  • God wants Godly children. If yours are grown, pray for their children. If you don't have any, be part of a church that teaches children.
