Day One: The Forty-Day Bible Adventure

A couple days ago, I bought a book titled The 40-Day Bible Adventure by Christopher D. Hudson. It intrigued me because I have never truly understood how the Bible's stories manages to fit all together. I know God's Word ultimately shows his unfailing love for us, and that pretty much all of the books of the Old Testament talk of the coming of Jesus, while the New Testament talks of the fulfillment of those prophecies. I'd like to think that I have a pretty good grasp of the Bible stories that were taught in Sunday School as I grew up, but I'm always amazed to hear about a story or two that I've never heard of before.

And since, my birthday is only 40 days away, what better way to utilize a birthday countdown? This book is said to go through all of the Bible's stories in forty days for a better understanding of God's Word. I will be posting the topics, verses, and questions that Hudson has written in his text along with my personal responses to his questions. Let the adventure begin!

Day One

GOD FORMS THE EARTH: Genesis 1:1-13

The question: What is God's initial response to His creation?

My response: By verse thirteen, the third day of God's creation has  come to be. During the first day, He created light and darkness. On the second day, He created the sky to divide the water in two. Then on the third day, God creates dry land and also plants to grow on it. It is on this third day that God first says that these creations are good.

GOD FILLS THE EARTH: Genesis 1:14-25

This question: Days 1-6 have literary parallels. How does day 1 parallel with day 4, day 2 with day 5, and day 3 with day 6?

My response: Both day 1 and day 4 have to do with the creation of light. On day 1, God creates literal light and darkness, which become night and day. On day 4, God creates the stars, moon, and the sun to separate night and day. Day 2 and day 5 have to do with the sky and oceans. On day 2, God creates the sky by adding air above the ocean. On day 5, God populates the sky and oceans with living creatures. As with the previous parallel, day 3 and day 6 correspond because they both have to do with land. On day 3, God creates land, and on day 6, God populates it with animals.

GOD CREATES MAN: Genesis 1:26-2:3

The Question: What were God's original intentions for humanity?

My response: According to this reading selection, God created human beings "in his image," which is to say he intended us to be like him. He made humans to rule over earth, including all the animals on the land, in the ocean, and sky. The plants that bore seeds were created as food for us, and the green plants were created as food for the animals.

GOD CREATES WOMAN: Genesis 2:15-25

The Questions: What do these verses teach us about man?
What can you learn about God from this event?

My response: The fact that Adam had the responsibility to name all of the animals shows the great authority that God has put on man over other creatures. Then when God puts Adam into a deep sleep, it shows that God cares deeply for man's hard work and desires good for man. God created humans, men and women, to work together as one.

If you'd like to join in on the 40-Day Bible Adventure as well, the book's ISBN is 978-1-63058-669-0. More information on the book can be found at Hudson's blog.
Just for the record, I have not been endorsed to do this in any way, shape, or form; I am doing the adventure through eagerness and posting my response to promote understanding and conversation of God's Word. Thanks for reading!
