Aug. 03, 2016 | Agape Love

This is a message from FBA's Wednesday night Bible study with Dr. Harris as the guest speaker. My notes are only meant to be a guide to assist in your Bible study. Enjoy! :)

John 13:1-17
Marvelous definition of love: Corinthians 13
  • Jesus: Our example of Old Fashioned Christian Love.
    • Last year, our government attempted to redefine marriage.
    • What does it really mean to have agape love?
    • Our culture has affection for old things, yet we have become jaded with old love.
    • Culture paints love as such that:
      • Restores but does not rebuke
      • Comforts but does not confront
      • Consoles but does not criticize
    • BIBLICAL LOVE includes hate in it.
      • Love The Lord hate evil
      • Love the good
      • Friend of the world, enemy of God.
  • Christ's Love:
    • Sacrifices. Philippians 2
      1. Jesus demonstrated His sacrificial love by going in obedience to God the Father.
        • How do we share the gospel of His Love without going first?
        • We are to continue our mission until it has been completed.
      2. Jesus demonstrated His sacrificial love in His giving.
        • Christians in third world countries are so much more willing to give in their poverty while Christians elsewhere have trouble giving in their plenty.
        • Three kinds of givers: Flint (must ask to get a little). Sponge (squeeze out to get something). Honeycomb (overflows with sweetness).
        • Happiness: God above all else, joy in serving, caring for others
    • Scolds. Revelation 19 (rebuke and chasten)
      • World's view of love: they believe in a God of love, but not a God of law. Emotional love with the outlook of universalism.
      • Psalm 119. 22 sections with 8 verses. Each verse begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
      • Dr. Harris does it again! He wrote an amazing piece of work comparing many famous writers' works to the unbeatable Word of God! He went alphabetically from a-z! It was beautiful! ill try to catch them all when the recording comes out!
        • Charm of Chaucer, heroics of homer humbled by harmonies of heaven, jangling s of Joyce are jaded by of Jesus. Manuscripts of Milton melt before the majestic music of Master. Odes of oneill poetic quotes of quarrels railings of rusting stories of Shakespeare shrink in scared tales of Tennyson undering s of virtues of Virgil harms of sill of Shoah
      • Anchor your life on the Word of God. Don't let the world define your definition of love. Use the Word of God to define  love.
    • Sanctifies. Psalm 119:9-10
      • Wash your feet in Jesus.
      • If the walk is right, the work will be acceptable.
      • Once you're clean, you can become a vessel
      • 2 Chronicles 16:9
      • Samuel Chadwick "saved and sanctified with the fire of God."
      • Once you are sanctified:
        1. God will provide your needs, no matter what it is.
        2. Provision of Power.
